Series: Adventure Time
Timeline: Post-Simon and Marcy
Canon Resource Link: Adventure Time Wikia: Marceline
Character Background: Marceline grew up in the post-apocalyptic aftermath of the Mushroom War. She is the daughter of the ruler of the Nightosphere, but her father, a man as chaotic as the realm he rules and extremely self-centered to boot, is far from a consistent presence in Marceline's life. She was, for all intents and purposes, left alone to fend for herself until she met Simon.
Simon cared for her and protected her, and he quickly became Marceline's role model, a true father figure to her. He taught her right from wrong, entertained her, and did his best to distract her from the horrors of their day-to-day fight for survival, and she tried her best to return the favor. It was from Simon that Marceline got her love of music. She believed in him and loved him dearly, and in any other situation, that would probably have been enough for a happy ending, but in a world full of monsters and other dangers, there was bound to be a problem.
For Marceline and Simon, the problem was his crown. It gave him powers of ice and snow, and was a great boon for a human trying to protect himself and a little girl. As for Marceline, she absolutely hated that crown. It might have saved them a number of times, but at the cost of Simon's sanity. Every time he wore it, Marceline would see a little more of Simon slip away, and she begged him not to use it. She would run, hide, or fight with him, whatever was necessary, as long as it would mean keeping who he was. She made him promise never to wear the crown, and he tried. But when it came down to his sanity or Marceline's life, he had to break his promise.
Eventually Simon lost himself completely and became the Ice King, and Marceline was left on her own, her only companion the toy Hambo Simon had given to her. She survived, mostly because she managed to reconnect with her parents. However, she feels horribly betrayed when, in her teenage years, her father eats the fries she had bought, making her question whether he ever even cared about her.
Marceline went off on her own again, and became a vampire in her travels. After some time she got a boyfriend named Ash who was into magic, and they ended up moving in together, and they were happy for a time. But Marceline grew more and more despondent as she came to realize Ash was an egotistical jerk. He would mock her and call her stupid, and the last straw came when he sold Hambo to a witch for a magic wand. He knew it was the thing she cared most about in the world, but he did not care; the sentiment she had for Hambo only made it a more valuable bargaining piece. Marceline broke up with him, and she was alone again.
After that Marceline traveled the land of Ooo having all sorts of adventures. If there was something exciting to be seen or done, she was there. She has lived in all sorts of places, preferring to always have a place to come back to. The problem with having a place she can always be found, however, was that the Ice King would always eventually find her. For centuries Marceline could not stand the Ice King, hating who he had become and miserable with the fact that he could not remember who he used to be, back when it was just Simon and Marcy trying to make their way in the world. It almost seemed to Marceline that he would search her out, but it was so horrible to see him, she would end up moving again each time.
In her travels Marceline became known across Ooo as a musician, and would be invited to play at parties. For a short time she made friends with Princess Bubblegum of the Candy Kingdom. Their different outlooks made it difficult to see eye to eye, though, and the friendship ended poorly. Her goal in life simply became to have fun, and it made everything seem easier. She was just fine with things how they were, even if it was occasionally lonely.
All of that changed when she went back to one of her old houses and found the adventurers Finn and Jake living there. She kicked them out because, after all, it was her house first. But it was sort of fun messing with the mortals, so when she heard they'd cleaned up an old cave of hers and had invited people to a housewarming party there, she went. She intended to take that from them, too, but when Finn fought back she decided they were pretty okay after all and gave them their house back, deciding to live in the cave instead.
Thus began her friendship with Finn and Jake. At first she quite enjoyed pranking Finn, even going so far as to trick him into becoming her henchman. It was a lot of fun for her, tricking the ever-heroic Finn into doing things he thought were evil. Of course, all of them turned out alright in the end, and Finn caught on to her games and realized she was just messing with him. Jake still didn't trust her for a time, but he was eventually won over.
In a jam session with Jake, Marceline lets out some of her feelings toward her father. Little did she know, Finn assumed that meant she'd like to see him. He stole her axe-bass and went to terrorize Ooo, but with Finn's help she ended up confronting him and even started toward reconciling with him. She tries to help him win Princess Bubblegum's affections in return, but all her advice is more up the alley of fun-loving adventurers like Finn and herself, and it only makes the princess angry.
Although she loves to mess with them, often hiding around their house and spying on them, it's obvious she comes to care about Finn and Jake. At one point, she pretends to turn them into vampires, tricking them into thinking they had acquired various vampire powers. But when her ghost friends, in on the joke, try to kill Jake and Finn for real, Marceline saves them from a fall the ghosts said would teach them to fly, and advises them against going to the ghosts' house. Jake and Finn return the favor when Ash comes to steal her memory of their break-up. Without the memory, she was back in the relationship and just as miserable as miserable can be. Luckily Finn had watched her memory; his memory of her memory was able to replace the original, and she broke it off immediately.
When a door lord rushed through her house one day along his theft spree, Marceline followed Finn, Jake, their video game system BMO, and Princess Bubblegum in their pursuit. The door lord opened a door that can only be opened through song. Princess Bubblegum ends up objecting to Marceline's song, however, and Marceline angrily asks if it's the song or Marceline that Princess Bubblegum actually dislikes. Through song she ended up revealing her frustration with Princess Bubblegum and their relationship, and her wish to make up with her, but she got embarrassed when she realized how much she had said. Her song got the door reacting, but it stopped when she did. When Princess Bubblegum's attempt turned out disastrous, Marceline picked a fight with her, almost ending the band and their chance to open the door. It's only thanks to Finn and his heartfelt song that they beat the door lord, revealing that the door lord had taken a T-shirt from Princess Bubblegum that she had originally received from Marceline. She had assumed Princess Bubblegum hated her, so the fact that she had kept something from Marceline made her realize that maybe Princess Bubblegum wanted to reconcile with her, too.
When she invited Finn and Jake along with her to visit her dad, Marceline's dad ended up tricking her into taking over ruler-ship of the Nightosphere, and Marceline tried to protect her friends, first by locking them up, and later by sending them away through a portal and shutting it behind them. They refused to stay away, however, and ended up saving her from the chaotic amulet controlling her behavior. The whole thing actually helped her express herself to her father, to tell him she wanted him to be proud of who she is.
Completing the confrontations and reconciliations, Marceline received a visit from the Ice King one day, asking for her help in writing a song. At first she simply wanted to get rid of him, but she changed her mind, taking pity upon him for being so pathetic. When he started to go a little crazy during his song, Marceline tried to stop him and got pushed for her efforts. She was far more annoyed with herself than him, for thinking she could help him remember himself as Simon, and sang out her frustration. She admitted she likes him, though he didn't understand her meaning and Marceline tries to show him old articles and pictures to bring his memories back, and ended up finding a note he had written to her while he was in the midst of losing himself. It makes her want to renew her efforts to bring Simon back, going to visit him when he was telling his fanfiction stories about Fionna and Cake, his female versions of Finn and Jake, and later inviting him to play basketball with them.
Abilities/Special Powers: Marceline has a number of vampiric powers, such as:
Shape-shifting: Marceline can turn into monstrous versions of herself. She is seen to turn into a large bat, a wolf, an almost-humanoid monster, and a black tentacle blob.
Levitation: Marceline floats everywhere she goes, traveling around by flight. She also floats above furniture rather than sitting or laying on it.
Necromancy: If there are bodies around, Marceline can reanimate the corpses, creating an undead army for herself. Skeletons are her common minion.
Invisibility: Marceline can turn invisible, which she most often employs to mess around with people or to spy on them.
Fast healing: As a vampire, direct sunlight can burn Marceline, but once she's out of it she heals almost instantly.
Eats shades of red: Rather than drinking blood (though she can do that, too), Marceline eats a diet made up of shades of red, leaving objects unharmed but colorless.
Third-Person Sample: If she thought about it, Marceline wouldn't have been able to pinpoint exactly when she'd appeared above the mansion. She had been floating around aimlessly for quite awhile already today, waiting for pretty much anything to happen. She'd set out trying to find someone to hang out with, and it had just gotten more and more frustrating as everyone turned out to be away. Finn and Jake were out adventuring, her royal highness was dealing with some disaster, even the Ice King was away! Ugh! It was like the worst day ever.
She hadn't felt like going home to record on her own after all the work she'd put into finding those jerks, and if they couldn't be decent enough to be around when she wanted to see them, she wasn't going to hide out waiting for them, either. There were plenty of adventures to be had on her own.
Of course, there wasn't anything she especially wanted to do, so her flight had been rather aimless until she happened to look down and spot the large building below her. That was...new. She'd been all over Ooo, and she'd definitely never seen this place before. That was excitement calling if she'd ever heard it.
Flying down, Marceline started looking in the windows. At first it seemed boring. Just regular rooms, and mostly empty at that. Whoever heard of a building just full of the same room? Boooooring. But then suddenly she caught a glimpse of something different. Backing up, she took another, longer look. This room wasn't anything like the others. It was larger, shaped differently, and full of all sorts of things.
It wasn't just the one room, she found out as she continued flying around the building. As she flew past the lower stories, more and more rooms seemed to differ from the boring ones that the top was filled with. Some even had people in them, and she tapped on those windows as she passed, cackling at the thought of their freaked out faces when they saw no one outside.
Forget about those other guys, this was the best day ever. There was a whole new place in Ooo to explore, and she was gonna be the only one to know about it. Laughing, she flipped over to float on her back, circling up and over the building, going around above it several times in her merriment before slowing into a lazy descent back toward the ground.
Obviously she'd have to bring Finn here, eventually. There were probably about a million things to do here. When something mysterious appears, it was basically bound to be full of interesting things. She would just have to discover them all first, and then lure him out here. And then as he stared in wonder at all the amazing things about this place, she'd just be like, 'well yeah, that's what it's like at this place.'
Wherever this place was.
First-Person Sample: [The camera turns on to show a girl, apparently in her upper teens. She's lying down with the communicator held above her, but she's obvious not so much lying in bed as floating several feet above it.]
So, this little thing plays some pretty okay jams, I guess. Who knew there were so many bands around. There are just pages of songs in this thing.
[She flips over to float on her stomach, the communicator now held out in front of her.]
It's not so good at creating music, though. Anyone here know where I could get a guitar, or even just a synthesizer? I can't believe I left my bass at home.
[She makes a frustrated harumph.]
You all seem pretty cool, I'll tell you what. If anyone can help me with the whole finding an instrument thing, we can play something together sometime. You'll know where to find me, I'm Marceline, the Vampire Queen.
[Marceline reaches a hand in front of the screen as if to turn off the feed, then thinks better of it, pulling her hand away.]
If anyone can tell me where I am exactly, I guess that would be pretty cool, too.
[This time when she reaches over, she does end the video, the entry turning to black.]
